If you've been trying to figure out which AI assistant to commit to, you've probably read a dozen comparison articles that all say the same thing: "It depends on your use case!" — and then don't actually tell you what to do.
We spent 30 days running the same real-world tasks through ChatGPT (GPT-4o), Claude 3.7 Sonnet, and Gemini 2.5 Pro across four categories: writing, coding, reasoning, and research. Here's what we found.
The short answer (for people who don't want to read the whole thing)
- Writing & communication → Claude. It's noticeably better at tone, nuance, and producing content that doesn't sound like an AI wrote it.
- Coding → ChatGPT or Claude depending on the stack. GPT-4o is strong on popular frameworks; Claude handles edge cases and refactoring better.
- Research & synthesis → Gemini 2.5 Pro. The grounding to real-time Google Search is genuinely useful, and it handles long documents well.
- General assistant / everyday tasks → ChatGPT. The ecosystem (plugins, image gen, voice mode) is still the most polished.
Writing
This is where the gap is most visible. We gave all three the same brief: write a cold outreach email for a B2B SaaS product targeting HR managers, under 100 words, no buzzwords.
ChatGPT produced a clean, competent email. Readable. Inoffensive. Also unmistakably AI-generated — it leads with a question, uses "I hope this finds you well," and wraps with a generic CTA.
Gemini gave us something similar — slightly more structured, but the same energy. It errs toward formal and safe.
Claude produced something you'd actually send. It opened with a specific pain point, kept the tone human, and didn't feel templated. When we tested variants and asked for "more direct" or "more casual," Claude's rewrites were meaningfully different — not just word swaps.
For anything customer-facing — emails, landing pages, social, proposals — Claude is our default.
Coding
Here the answer is more nuanced. We tested across three scenarios: writing new functionality from scratch, debugging an existing codebase, and refactoring messy legacy code.
Writing new code: GPT-4o and Claude are close. GPT-4o has a slight edge with React, Next.js, and Python — probably because it's seen more of it. Both produce runnable code on the first try most of the time.
Debugging: Claude. It reads the full context better and explains what went wrong, not just what to change. GPT-4o sometimes patches the symptom without diagnosing the cause.
Refactoring: Claude by a wide margin. Give it a messy 200-line function and it restructures with actual intention — better naming, separation of concerns, and it flags what it changed and why.
Gemini is improving but still behind in coding tasks. It's our last choice here.
Research & Synthesis
This is Gemini's home turf. It's the only one with real-time web access baked in by default (not a plugin, not a toggle), and it shows.
We asked all three about recent funding rounds in the AI space and current pricing for a specific set of tools. ChatGPT and Claude either refused or hallucinated with confidence. Gemini cited sources and got it right.
For long document analysis (PDFs, research papers, long transcripts), Gemini 2.5 Pro handles the most tokens and stays coherent further into the document. Claude's context window is also large, but Gemini felt more consistent at the very end of long documents.
If your work involves staying current on markets, news, competitors, or synthesizing research, Gemini earns its keep.
What nobody talks about: the ecosystem gap
ChatGPT wins on everything around the model — voice mode, image generation (DALL-E), the custom GPTs store, plugins, and the most polished mobile app. If you want one tool that does a lot of things reasonably well, that ecosystem matters.
Claude's interface is clean but lean. No image gen, no voice mode. The API is excellent, and the system prompt flexibility is best-in-class for developers, but as a consumer product it's more limited.
Gemini ties into Google Workspace, which is either a major advantage or irrelevant depending on whether you live in Docs and Sheets.
Our actual recommendation
Start with Claude if your primary use case is writing, client communication, or refining ideas. The quality ceiling is higher and it's less likely to embarrass you.
Add ChatGPT if you need the ecosystem — especially voice mode, image generation, or custom GPTs built by the community.
Use Gemini specifically when you need current information or you're doing deep research on something time-sensitive.
